Sam Chung WORKSHOP FLIER 2019-4-page-001

Sam Chung ACAG Workshop

May 11-12, 2019

Workshop Description: Off-Axis Bottles

In this workshop, we will focus on strategies for throwing off-axis bottles. This will involve throwing the bodies in 2-halves and assembling together using a chuck. Feet and necks will be thrown separately and added after bodies are assembled. These off-axis forms can become other types of forms such as teapots and pitchers. I will also demonstrate how I alter the surfaces of my thrown forms by cutting into the surface and projecting shapes outward, then filling the openings with slabs. These “projected” shapes can drastically alter the form and create other opportunities when considering surface design. If time permits, I can demonstrate how to make slab-built handles/spouts using custom templates.

Saturday:

Demo AM – Throw sections for 2 off-axis bottles

Hands-On – Students throw sections

Demo PM – Throw feet and necks for bottles. Trim bottle sections if dry enough.

Hands-On – Students continue to throw sections for bottles

Sunday:

Demo AM – Trim and Assemble Bottles

Hands-On – Trim and Assemble Bottles

Demo PM – Alter bottles – cutting into the surface and adding slab parts

Hands-On – Experiment with altering bottles

Demo PM – Slab built spouts/handles if time permits
